As promised, here are plans for a purple martin bird house that may take more than one weekend depending upon how many levels you choose to build, tools and woodworking skill level.
Purple martins live on an insect diet, eating primarily flying insects such as moths, gnats, flies, and mosquitoes. They catch most of their prey in midair and they even drink in midair.
Purple martins are social, colony-based birds, especially in eastern populations with dozens of nests. Nesting colonies may include hundreds of pairs of birds in multiple “houses”.
If you want a long term solution that doesn’t involve woodworking or growing & drying gourds, you can always buy a pre-made gourd-like version and have it on your doorstep in a few days via our friends at Amazon!
Good luck building or assemblilng a home for some of our avian friends!
